| GEF has initiated a Project for the determination of Priority Actions
for the further Elaboration and implementation of the Strategic Action Programme
(SAP) to address pollution from land based activities for the Mediterranean
Sea. The overall goal of this three year project is to improve the quality of the marine environment in the Mediterranean region by better shared-management of land-based pollution through improved international cooperation. The project was launched on 1 January 2001 with the participation of all Mediterranean countries. However, only twelve of them are GEF eligible countries (Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Slovenia, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey) and receive support for the implementation of activities at national levels. The GEF project is 12.2 million US dollars worth. It is financed by GEF (6 million), the Mediterranean Trust Fund (0.8 million), METAP (0.45 million), the French Fonds Francais pour l'Environnement Mondial (1.6 million), ICS-UNICO (o.15 million) as well as in kind contribution from various participants. It is managed by the Mediterranean Action Plan and implemented by its Secretariat and MED POL, in co-operation with World Health Organisation (WHO), with the involvement of three MAP Retional Activities Centres (PAP/RAC, RAC/CP, and SPA/RAC) and the METAP.
